200 year old hotel
![]() ![]() ![]() Just over 8 years ago, myself and an ex-girlfriend had become very interested in ghost stories and events of the supernatural, due to a small experience we both had late one night when walking home from a night club (that is a different story).
We did some research into the area and found that there was a small pub rated in the top 5 haunted buildings in the UK. This was in Howarth, the small village where the famous Bronte sisters grew up, and this being only 15 miles from our hometown we decided to start frequenting it. After about 5 weeks of visiting every Saturday night, we had seen and heard nothing, although the atmosphere of the pub was thick with history and chilled us just knowing that it was apparently haunted. We had been chatting to the landlady every week, and on the 6th week as it was getting late she offered us a free room for the night, however there was a catch, we had to stay in room 9. This room was the infamous haunted room where there had been hundreds of reports of supernatural happenings over the 200 years the building had been a pub/hotel.
However at this point neither my partner nor myself knew this. We stayed in the bar area until 1am, while the landlady pointed out various strange happenings. The fire in the fireplace blew out at one point, a leather chair by the bar suddenly became indented as though someone had sat down, and two glasses from a shelf behind the bar came crashing down. However these were but the appetizers for what was about to happen. We retired to room 9, and eventually got into the bed and turned out the light. About 20 minutes went by and we were both dozing off when the room became so cold that our breath was easily visible in the dim moonlit room.
Suddenly the Bed rose from the floor, this happened so quickly there was no time to jump free, it stayed in the air of a few seconds before it hit the floor, and then began to drag along the floor towards the opposite side of the room. Needless to say we jumped out of bed and made a charge for the door. Just as we reached it the landlady opened it and told us she would move us to another room. She had expected something to happen, and the only comment she gave us was "at least you did not see her hanging in the corner like I did, you only got the bed thing". In the morning she explained that the room had been a servant girls room back in the 1600’s, and she had hanged herself from a beam in the corner, using the bed to gain the height she needed. Needless to say we never stayed there again, but we did check on the story and found over 150 different reports about room 9, some were official supernatural experiments and others just eye-witness accounts. Before that night I was a skeptic, I have believed since that night on…..
